Cams picked up the guitar at 21 after being blown away by a documentary on Bert Jansch and never really put it down again. In 2002 he got his first high-end acoustic guitar and began learning to play fingerstyle tunes in the Scots/Irish tradition, eventually having the chance to take workshops from and play with his heroes Tony McManus and El McMeen. He was involved in the online guitar community and through that struck up friendships with a lot of American pickers; thus started a tradition of travelling to Atlanta every autumn to play with friends and run workshops on traditional and folk music from the British Isles. It was there that he was introduced to bluegrass and the flatpicking style by Red Bear Trading’s pick maker, Dave Skowron, and it was love at first listen. On moving to Arran in 2008, Cams met Donal and it wasn’t long before they were trading licks on fiddle and guitar, eventually leading to the formation of Arran’s very own bluegrass band, The Saggy Bottom Boys. Cams has played many gigs with the full band and with individual members as a duo or trio around the island’s pubs and hotels.
